You have no power over me

Last night I watched Labyrinth for the first time in years. Have you ever noticed how the final confrontation between Sarah and Jareth is kicking some patriarchal ass?

Look, Sarah. Look what I'm offering you: your dreams. I ask for so little, just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want. Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave. -Jareth

What does this sound like? A man promising a woman all her dreams if only she give up her independence, her goals, her life to serve his every desire?

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. -Ephesians 5:22-27

Hmmmmmmm. But Sarah says, "fuck you and the patriarchy you rode in on!"

For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom as great. You have no power over me.
